ISO TANK CONTAINER

ISO TANK CONTAINER is a pressure vessel mounted in a frame. Frame dimensions comply with the recommendations of the International Standards Organization (ISO). The unit is designed and constructed in accordance with strict international codes for the worldwide carriage of bulk liquids on land, rail and water.

ISO tank construction materials are made of stainless steel AISI 316. Tanks are classified according to the specifications of tank shell and fittings. It is this classification that determines what type of product may be carried.

STRUCTURE

Generally, a tank container consists of two main sections: the frame and the cylindrical barrel made of stainless steel. However, each tank also has several additional features. The features vary from one tank container to another, below we give you some examples of features.

On top of the tank container, you can find a walkway.To get on top of the tank, there is also a ladder at the back of the container. Many tank containers also have a dipstick in stainless steel and a properly engraved calibration chart. The chart enables you to calculate the volume of the product to be loaded, expressed in liters. The dipstick gives a visual check on the actual volume that has been loaded into the tank container.

Two other standard features are the document-tube and the label holder. The document-tube should be watertight and of sufficient size to contain all the necessary load documentation. It should be located in a protected and secured area to avoid document theft during transit, a recognized problem within the industry. The label holder is secured to the tank shell, and displays the safety labels required to identify the tank contents. Well-equipped tank containers have several label holders

The tank container also has an identification plate or certificate plate, with general information on technicalities and origin of the tank.

Manlids

The manlids cover the loading manholes on top of the tank container. Each manlid has 6 tightening clamps with swingbolts. The insulated manlid covers avoid loss of temperature. They also offer space to carry sample bottles, and keep the loading area clean and well protected. Anti slip zones inside the manlid covers increase the operational safety.

Gaskets

PTFE Polytetrafluoroethylene.

A plastic used for gaskets and bearings. It has a wide temperature tolerance and is resistant to most chemicals.

SWR Sweet White Rubber.

A rubber used for Food grade products.

Viton A

A synthetic rubber used for gaskets. Has good sealing properties and is tolerant to a wide spectrum of chemicals.Standard seal and gasket materials vary according to the tank type. The operation must ensure that the seals are compatible with the product to be carried.

Top Outlet

The top outlet is situated at the rear of the tank and consists of a syphon pipe, a 3 inch plate valve or butterfly valve, a 3 inch BS table ‘D’ flange and a blanking plate.
Top outlet loading/discharge is not commonly used, so to avoid unnecessary aintenance and cleaning, the syphon pipe and valve may be supplied on IMO 1 tanks only when specifically requested.

Bottom discharge valve

The bottom valves are being used to discharge the tank container. The construction of the inner footvalve prevents the tank container from leaking during a severe incident where all external valve segments would have been ripped off. The triple closure system ensures maximum safety during transport and discharge of the tank.

Safety relief valve

The pressure safety valve is a two directional valve that releases the pressure inside the tank container when this exceeds the certified working pressure. It opens in the other direction to let in atmosphere air and pressure in case the tank container undergoes vacuum sucking beyond its certified maximum.

Airline valve

The valve is used for pressuring the tank during discharge (pushes out the loaded product) or testing, and for vapour recovery. It terminates in a 1 1/2” BSP male threaded airline connection and screw cap.

Heating – Electric

The external shell heating systems consist of a network of elements in contact with the shell over the bottom third of the circumference of the tank. These heaters are especially suitable for heat sensitive products. This system operates on either 200-280 V 3-phrase or 340-480 3 phase. Power output at 440V is 15kW.
That in principle, electric heating is designed to maintain temperature only. It is not designed to reheat the product.

Heating – Steam

Steam Heating is the most efficient means of heating the tank cargo. Typical heating area - 8 sq.m. The steam channels, continuous loops of pipework, usually on the outside of the lower half of the tank, terminate at the rear of the tank and are closed by threaded dust caps. The inlet and outlet can be fitted with a valve, and the outlet should be fitted with a steam condensate trap. Care should be taken to ensure the maximum working pressure of the system is indicated on the dated plate.

ADVANTAGES

Environmental Efficiency The ISO tank container is a recyclable resource, which can be used over and over again.

Greater Capacity Large format tank containers can carry a far greater quantity of liquid for the equivalent shipping space and cost compared to an ISO container filled with drums.

Ease of Maintenance ISO tank containers have the added benefit of stainless-steel cleanliness and strength, pressurization and integral heating systems.
